Mignon Furman
is the founder and director of the American Academy of Ballet
and the composer of the Performance Awards and other teaching
programs. The former director of the University of Cape Town
Ballet School, she was nominated for the university’s
Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dance Studio Life
publisher Rhee Gold grew up in dance studios and
later operated his own. He has performed and choreographed
professionally, owned a leading dance competition, presided
over national dance teaching organizations, and founded
Project Motivate to reinvigorate dance teachers. His book,
The Complete Guide to Teaching Dance, is in its second
printing.
Diane Gudat
is from Indianapolis, IN, where she has owned her own school,
The Dance Company, Inc., since 1979. She is the author of four
books on dance education, including Acrobatics for the
Dance Studio and The Time Step Dictionary. She has
served on the faculty of the DMA, DTCB, FDM, and the CNADM
Teacher Training Schools.
Tori Melby,
owner of Dancer’s Workshop in Sanford, NC, and a past
president of Carolina Dance Masters, has been teaching dance
for 22 years. A master teacher and choreographer, she received
the Sherry Gold Choreography Award in 2004. Her students have
included Junior Miss Dance of America 2005 and Petite Miss
Dance of America 2007.
Rachel Straus
writes for Dance Magazine, Dance Studio Life, Dance Spirit,
and Ballet.co.uk
and edited The Finis Jhung Ballet Technique: A Guide for
Teachers & Students. A 2007 NEA Arts Journalism Fellow,
she holds a journalism degree from Columbia University and an
MFA from Purchase College.
Lisa Traiger
has been a dance critic and performing-arts journalist since
1985. Her work has appeared in many publications, including
The Washington Post, Dance Magazine,
Stagebill, The Sondheim Review, Washington Jewish Week, The
Washington Times, Intermission, and Washington Review.
She is a former chair of the Dance Critics Association.
Vanina and Dennis
Wilson are director and administrator, respectively, of
the New England Ballet Conservatory. Vanina received her
ballet training the Paris Opéra and danced professionally in
France. She taught ballet at the Virginia Institute for the
Performing Arts. Her articles, co-authored by her husband,
have appeared in Dance Europe and the Loyola
Consumer Law Review.
Nancy Wozny
was an NEA Fellow at the Institute for Dance Criticism at the
American Dance Festival and a 2004 recipient of the Gary Parks
Memorial Award for Emerging Dance Critics. Her work has
appeared in Dance Magazine, The Houston Chronicle,
Artshouston, and other publications. She is also a
guild-certified practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method.
